Posting: The Basics
The core of any community is its discussions! In order to do that, you need to know what options are available to you while you're here. First, you need to pick a category to post in. We have a wide variety of topics and sections to choose from. Once you are ready to post, you have a couple options to choose from.
First, you can simply click the blue "New Discussion" button on the sidebar from the Category or Discussion pages. This is located on the right-hand side under the light blue buttons.
From here, you will see this editor where you must choose the category that you wish to post a discussion in before you write your discussion.
Add a title, your content, some tags (if you want to) and post! Easy peasy.
Okay okay, let's go into more detail here.
First off, the category. Clicking on the Category option will show you a drop-down of the Categories you are able to post discussions in. Some of them are greyed out and cannot be selected. These are either Header categories or categories where you need special permissions to post discussions (ex. Community Announcements are restricted to administrators and mods).
Once you select your category, you are ready to post. It's important to note that if you are already in a category (ex. Scuttlebutt) and press the New Discussion button, it will assume that you wish to post in that category and will not give you a category drop-down in that editor.
If you post something in the wrong location, let us know and we can move it for you!
Next, you'll want a snappy title and the content of your discussion. You have a few formatting options when creating your discussion such as headings, quotes, lists and images.
Formatting isn't necessary if you want to just keep your content simple and to the point, but you have options to organize and add if you think it clarifies the post.
Lastly, you can tag the post so that other members can find your content and topics easier.
If you're at a loss for what tags to use (like I often am), you can click "Show popular tags" to see what others have used to tag their posts.
Once you are finished, press Post Discussion!
Your discussion will save as you work in case you need to step away or you get interrupted. You can also click "Save Draft" if you would like to return to editing at a later time. If you wish to access your drafts, you can find them in your Quick Links on the side bar.
You can also comment on discussions (even in categories you cannot post discussions in). All you must do is scroll to the bottom of the discussion, type up your comment, then press post.
